There is a unique kind of magic in finding something extraordinary in your own backyard. Recently, we packed up the dogs, and headed south for a "weightless" escape to discover the hidden giants of Ohio. From the whimsical, recycled creations of Thomas Dambo to the prehistoric wonders of a hidden college museum, this trip was all about slowing down and finding wonder in the detours. If you’re looking for a weekend that’s equal parts art, science, and ice cream, this is the perfect route for Ohio locals and wanderers alike.
The Art of the Troll: Thomas Dambo
Thomas Dambo is a world-renowned Danish recycle artist who breathes new life into "trash" by transforming discarded wood pallets and reclaimed materials into monumental, larger-than-life trolls. His work is a beautiful intersection of folklore and environmental activism, designed to lure humans away from their screens and out into the natural world to rediscover the magic of the forests. Each troll is a unique, hand-built guardian with its own story and personality, serving as a gentle yet towering reminder that with a little imagination, what we throw away can be turned into something truly extraordinary. ♻️✨
To add that extra layer of magic to the adventure, don't forget to check out Thomas Dambo’s interactive troll map! It’s a digital "treasure map" that connects you to his giant guardians all over the globe. It is super cool to see how the Ohio trolls are part of a much bigger, worldwide family—it really turns a local hike into a global scavenger hunt and helps you plan your next troll-spotting detour wherever you wander. 🗺️👹

Exploring Aullwood Audubon & Arboretum
The grounds at Aullwood Audubon offer a beautifully "weightless" escape, where the manicured gardens of the Arboretum seamlessly blend into wilder prairies and lush woodlands. Wandering the trails to find the trolls feels like a true scavenger hunt through nature, with plenty of wide-open spaces for the dogs to explore and Zion to lead the way. Whether you're crossing the wooden boardwalks over the marsh or sitting quietly under the towering oaks, the entire property has a grounded, peaceful energy that makes it easy to leave the stress of the work week behind. 🌿
"The Troll That Hatched an Egg" Exhibition
This exhibition is a special permanent installation that perfectly captures Dayton’s spirit of innovation. The exhibit features three towering giants—Bo, Bodil, and Bibbi—who tell a whimsical story that pays tribute to the area's history of aviation and the wonder of flight. As we hiked the trails to find them, it felt like stepping into a fairytale where the trolls are guardians of the forest and its stories. While the giant nest from the original installation has recently "returned to the earth" as part of its natural lifecycle, the three main trolls are still waiting to be discovered, making every visit a unique scavenger hunt through the trees. 🥚✈️
A Sweet Pit-Stop: Young’s Jersey Dairy
Located right in Yellow Springs, Young’s Jersey Dairy is the ultimate mid-point stop for anyone traveling between Dayton and Columbus. It’s a bustling, working dairy farm where the air smells like fresh waffle cones and the vibe is purely nostalgic. We loved that it's completely pet-friendly in the outdoor areas, making it easy to grab some of their legendary homemade ice cream or those famous deep-fried cheese curds and relax at a picnic table with the dogs. It’s the perfect spot to refuel, let Zion see the farm animals, and enjoy a slow, "weightless" moment before hitting the road again. 🍦🧀
A Science Detour: Orton Geological Museum
For a completely free and fascinating detour, we headed to The Ohio State University to visit the Orton Geological Museum. Tucked away in the historic Orton Hall right on the campus Oval, it’s a hidden gem where you can get up close with dinosaur fossils and a towering giant ground sloth. Since Zion was 11 at the time, being on a bustling college campus felt like a fun "big kid" adventure for both of us—especially when we encountered the school’s famous little delivery robots for the first time! Watching those high-tech "rovers" zip around the sidewalks was such a cool, unexpected highlight that made the whole afternoon feel like a weightless step into the future. 🦖🤖
This weekend was a perfect reminder that travel doesn't have to be heavy or complicated to be memorable. We covered art that saves the planet, fossils that tell our history, and even a few futuristic robots—all while keeping things frugal and pet-friendly. Whether you're a Single Mom by Choice looking for a manageable adventure or just someone who needs a dose of "weightless" wonder, Ohio’s Troll Trail is a safe harbor for the soul. Pack some sturdy shoes, grab a commemorative map, and go find your own giants!
